5 Cosy Cottage Christmas Wallpaper Options

There's something about an old cottage at Christmas that I don't think you can quite recreate anywhere else.

Living in an old Scottish cottage, I've become particularly fond of interiors that feel warm, lived-in and full of character.

And one thing I've been thinking about lately is wallpaper.

Because while we often think about Christmas decorating in terms of trees, wreaths and garlands, the colours and patterns already in a room can make an enormous difference to how festive it feels.

I particularly love wallpapers that look beautiful throughout the year but come into their own at Christmas.

So here are five cosy cottage Christmas wallpaper ideas that I think would look absolutely beautiful in a traditional home.

Deep Burgundy Victorian Floral Wallpaper

1. Deep Burgundy Victorian Floral Wallpaper

If I could choose one wallpaper style for a truly traditional Christmas cottage, this might be it.

Deep burgundy wallpaper with a delicate Victorian-inspired floral pattern feels incredibly warm and nostalgic.

It's the sort of design that makes me think of old country houses, dark wooden furniture, velvet curtains and Christmas trees decorated with antique gold ornaments.

The lovely thing about burgundy is that it already feels festive without needing a single Christmas decoration.

And when you add greenery, warm lights and a little tartan, it becomes even more beautiful.

Now this is the one for anybody who loves a slightly magical Christmas.

Imagine a wallpaper covered in delicate woodland illustrations.

Little foxes hiding among ferns.

Deer standing beneath branches.

Owls perched in trees.

I think this could look absolutely beautiful in a cottage.

Traditional Tartan Wallpaper in Forest Green and Red

3. Traditional Tartan Wallpaper in Forest Green and Red

Tartan might be an obvious choice for a Scottish Christmas cottage.

But I think there's a way to use it that feels beautifully traditional rather than overwhelming.

The trick is choosing a muted, heritage-style tartan rather than a bright novelty Christmas check.

Deep forest green, burgundy, navy and warm cream can look incredibly sophisticated together.

And because tartan has such strong associations with traditional country-house interiors, it works throughout the year.

Antique Botanical Wallpaper With Holly, Ivy and Winter Berries

This is probably the most naturally Christmassy wallpaper idea of the five.

But I wouldn't choose a print that looks like a novelty Christmas decoration.

Instead, I'd look for something inspired by old botanical illustrations.

Trailing ivy.

Delicate holly leaves.

Small red berries.

Perhaps a few winter branches.

The sort of wallpaper that looks as though it belongs in an old Victorian botanical book.

Midnight Blue Wallpaper With Golden Stars and Celestial Details

5. Midnight Blue Wallpaper With Golden Stars and Celestial Details

For the final wallpaper idea, I wanted something a little unexpected.

Because Christmas isn't only about red, green and tartan.

There's something wonderfully magical about a dark winter sky filled with tiny stars.

And I think a traditional celestial wallpaper could look absolutely beautiful in a cosy cottage.

Imagine deep midnight blue walls with delicate antique gold stars, tiny moons and perhaps little hand-drawn constellations.

Not a bright children's space-themed wallpaper.

Something much more subtle and old-fashioned.

Almost like an antique astronomical illustration.

Do You Need Christmas-Themed Wallpaper to Make a Room Feel Festive?

Not at all.

In fact, I think that's the secret to making a home feel traditionally Christmassy without having to redecorate every December.

Choose wallpaper you genuinely love for the other eleven months of the year.

Then let your Christmas decorations bring out the colours and details already in the pattern.

A burgundy floral wallpaper becomes beautifully festive with a green Christmas tree and gold ornaments.

A woodland print comes alive with natural decorations and little handmade animals.

A botanical wallpaper looks wonderful with holly, ivy and red ribbon.

And a midnight blue celestial print becomes magical with warm white lights.

You don't need to turn your whole house into a Christmas grotto.

Sometimes the right background is enough.

A Cosy Cottage Christmas That Lasts Beyond December

I think the older I get, the more I appreciate decorating choices that don't need changing every season.

I love Christmas.

I love the greenery, the candles, the traditional colours and the slightly magical feeling that comes with decorating an old cottage in winter.

But I also want my home to feel like my home in January, February and the middle of summer.

That's why I particularly love these five wallpaper styles.

They're all different, but they have one thing in common.

They feel warm, traditional and full of character.

And when Christmas arrives, they provide the perfect backdrop for everything else.

Which wallpaper would you choose for your cottage?

I think I'd be torn between the deep burgundy Victorian floral and the enchanted woodland print.

Although that midnight blue celestial wallpaper could be rather magical in a little reading room.

A Little Note About My Images ♡

You'll notice that the images across my blog are a mixture of my own photography and AI-generated images.

I'm a one-woman band running this little corner of the internet, without a team of photographers, designers or editors behind me. Living with OCD also means I can be particularly careful about things like copyright and image permissions, so I sometimes use AI to help bring my ideas to life without those additional worries.

Where possible, I love sharing my own photographs, especially glimpses of my cottage, garden and everyday life here in Scotland. Other times, I'll use AI-generated imagery to illustrate an idea or provide a little creative inspiration.

I believe in being transparent, so I wanted you to know that you'll find a mixture of both throughout my website. The words, experiences, opinions and ideas are my own.

Thank you for supporting my little one-woman blog! ❤️
